Traveling by yourself, especially as a woman, can be daunting. Here are some of my top countries for solo travel, places in which I always felt comfortable, safe, and welcome. I do want to note, though, that I am a white woman, so that influences my experience—for instance, although Japan is very safe, some Black travelers report that folks stare at them and ask for photos. If this has ever happened to you abroad, I would love to hear more about your experience in the comments section!
Iceland
Ranked as one of the safest—if not THE safest—countries in the world, Iceland was one of my all-time favorite trips. Landscapes right out of a fairytale, peace and quiet, fresh air, and easily navigable routes, this place has it all. It’s very expensive, but there are some budget flights between the US and Reykjavik—check out the Icelandic airline Play.
Austria
Salzburg and Hallstatt are two of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been in Europe. Incredible food, a laidback vibe, and gorgeous vistas, this is a great option for travelers who are looking to go beyond the more well-tread European countries like France, Spain, Italy, and Greece.
Japan
You probably already know the food scene in Japan is incredible; what I didn’t know was that a lot of restaurants there are perfectly suited for solo travelers—seating is arranged in little cubicles with plastic dividers between diners. In addition, the people are very kind and helpful, and also quite reserved—no one ever bothered me or even spoke to me. Train rides are silent and everyone is focused on themselves.
