My Two Favorite Restaurants in Santa Fe, New Mexico

I absolutely love New Mexican food--blue corn tortillas, Frito chili pie, and green chiles--however, my two favorite restaurants in Santa Fe are actually South Indian and pan-African/Caribbean. Both get quite popular, so expect a bit of a wait...and portions are large, so show up hungry!

The first one is Paper Dosa, a South Indian restaurant with the most divine menu. For appetizers, my friend and I ordered the Chennai chicken (US$13) and the dahi vada (US$11). The chicken came in little fried nuggets with a side of raita, a yummy yogurt sauce (which is also perfect for tempering spice if you're not a fan). The dahi vada dish featured the most delicious lentil fritters smothered in yogurt, tamarind chutney, and mint chutney. The portions were generous, but this didn't stop us from devouring our main entrees--which were also huge. I ordered the white truffle masala dosa ($US14) and my friend got the prawn Moilee curry (US$19)--one of the most delicious yellow curries I've ever had. The coconut and spices perfectly mingled together.

Next up is Jambo Cafe, an African-Caribbean restaurant by Ahmed Obo. I ordered the pomegranate BBQ chicken wrap with lemon harissa fries (US$13.95), and my friend got the banana leaf-wrapped, island-spiced mahi mahi (US$20.95). The spices and sauces steal the show here--my wrap was perfectly spicy, and the fries came with a harissa honey sauce. My friend's fish dish was generously topped with a mango tamarind coconut sauce. For dessert, we split a date coconut flourless cake (US$8.95), which came sprinkled in coconut flakes and accompanied by a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
